The Powers That Be

The Powers That Be

Alan Gignoux & Chloe Juno

Inspired by political campaign posters from the 2023 Polish parliamentary elections, The Powers That Be looks at the visual language of electioneering and the real-world outcomes shaped by political power.

While travelling through Poland to research coal mining, Alan Gignoux and Chloe Juno were struck by the faces of politicians appearing on colourful campaign banners across the country. Using Fuji Instax Wide Film, they photographed these posters in close-up, isolating features such as eyes, mouths and skin to create a strange and unsettling portrait of political advertising.

These images are shown alongside Gignoux’s photographs of Polish coal mines, whose futures would be affected by the election results. The book brings the two subjects together through bold design, placing cut-out Instax images over the mining photographs to create sharp, awkward juxtapositions between political promise and industrial reality.

Tucked into a glassine pocket at the end of the book is a printed fortune teller game using politicians’ features, offering a playful but pointed final comment on political choice and consequence.

This title is a limited edition of just 200 copies.
