Bewilderment Cards

Bewilderment Cards

Esther May Campbell & Kitchen Table Club

A tarot-inspired deck of 69 cards to help you look closer and spark creativity. Made with local kids from the Kitchen Table Photo Club, the cards combine photography and hand-drawn prompts to encourage play, imagination and attention to the everyday.

The Kitchen Table Photo Club began around Esther May Campbell’s kitchen table, where children gathered to make images with old analogue cameras. During lockdowns, the club sent Community Art Packages to families at home, leading to the creation of this deck.

Includes 49 photographic cards, 19 hand-drawn prompt cards and 1 instruction card.

HOW TO USE:

Bewilderment Cards come from exploring the common places we inhabit on a regular basis, to see what we might be unveiled if we listen with deer ears, sense the soil beneath our feet and the vast universe above. They have materialised as encounters with the living presence of things.

Now the cards exist for you to make your own images and play with your own imagination. There are many ways to use the deck but we recommend the following.

You will need:

  1. Bewilderment Cards,
  2. 35mm camera (Olympus Pens or Trips are ideal),
  3. Daylight
  4. A bag of props
  5. Friends or family.

Take Bewilderment Cards and knock the pack three times, give them a shuffle and spread them out in front of you. Think of a question to ask the cards about the future, past or present, or asking for inspiration for a new image. Take deep breaths hovering your hand above the cards until you sense warmth or tingling. Choose your card. What does the image mean to you here and now? How does it relate to your question? Now, with your friends, go and make your own picture inspired by the card's title.
