After Dark (Through Window), 2008

After Dark (Through Window), 2008

Sam Taylor-Johnson

After Dark (Through Window), 2008 by Sam Taylor-Johnson is offered as part of Side's 50x50 fundraising campaign. All profits from this sale will go to the AmberSide Trust (registered charity number: 1160760) to help fund Side’s ongoing community work, finance the continued care of the UNESCO-registered AmberSide Collection, enable future exhibitions and partnerships, and guarantee continued public access to documentary photography in the North East.

About the print:

Sam Taylor-Johnson combines elements of still and moving images, frequently exploring the tensions and entanglements arising between people in a closed environment. Often emotionally and spatially disorientating, her choreographed scenes bring together a cast of everyday people, close friends, models, and actors. Through highly charged scenarios, her artworks examine our shared social and psychological conditions, and the split between being and appearance.

Sam Taylor-Johnson

Sam Taylor-Johnson was born in London in 1967. At the age of sixteen, she enrolled in art school in Hastings, later moving back to London to attend Goldsmiths College. After graduating in 1990's she worked as a dresser at the Royal Opera House; this experience would influence her work's unabashed theatricality. She started working in photography and film in the 1990s, alongside fellow Young British Artists, Damien Hirst and Tracey Emin. She exhibited at Venice Biennale 1997, winning the Illy Café Prize for Most Promising Young Artist, and receiving a Turner Prize nomination in 1998. Taylor-Johnson broke records for the biggest opening for a female director for her adaptation of best-selling novel Fifty Shades of Grey (2015). As an artist she has exhibited at the Guggenheim, with solo exhibitions at The Hirshhorn Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art Sydney, Museum of Contemporary Art Houston, Walker Art Center Minneapolis among many others.
