Exhibition poster from ‘The Weegee Portfolio’ shown at Side Gallery 25 October-20 December 2008. (A2 420mm x 594mm)

The Weegee Portfolio, 49 (later 45) photographs printed in the early 1980s by the New York photographer and legendary darkroom master Sid Kaplan, is regarded as the best set of Weegee prints ever made. Side Gallery exhibition made the fullest presentation of that work that has ever been seen.
Amber/Side has one of the finest Weegee collections in the world, largely due to the work of Murray Martin, Amber founder member and key visionary who died in 2007.

Weegee fixed the memory and mythology of 1930-40s New York nightlife in the drama of his photographs. He was one of the first journalists to have a police radio fitted in his car and he had a reputation for being on the spot before anyone knew anything was happening. His themes however were far broader than the police stories and disasters that made him famous. Opera goers at the Met, low-life of Sammy’s in Bowery, public holidays in Coney Island, peddlers and children in the streets.
